Choose a cover by its care instructions and construction as well as its appearance. Texture alone does not tell you how it will wear.
Match the fabric to the room
A reading corner used by one adult and a family room used by children and pets place different demands on a cover. Start by deciding how often you expect to clean it, how much texture you want, and whether a spare cover is available. Then narrow the fabric choices.
“Soft” is a description of first impressions, not a complete specification. Look for fiber composition, care instructions, and information about the liner beneath the cover. The fabric name alone does not establish abrasion resistance, stain protection, or lifespan.
Plush fabrics add texture
Sherpa, faux fur, and corduroy create different visual effects even when offered in similar colors. Deep texture can make a large beanbag feel like a deliberate furnishing, but it can also make crumbs or pet hair less obvious until cleaning day. Consider the tools and routine you will actually use.
Ask for fabric samples when the brand offers them. Look at the sample against the floor and existing upholstery in both daylight and artificial light. A large expanse of a slightly wrong beige is harder to ignore than a small swatch.
Smooth and stretch covers do different jobs
A smooth wipe-clean surface can be practical where you want a simpler cleaning routine. Stretch covers allow a different interaction between the outer fabric and the moving filling. Neither construction is universally better; the shape and filling need to be considered with the cover.

Make the maintenance decision before the color decision
Find out whether the cover can be removed without exposing loose fill, how it is washed, and how it is dried. Confirm that a replacement cover fits your specific size and generation. A compatible spare may be a more useful purchase than a decorative accessory.
For outdoor use, choose a product explicitly sold for that environment and follow its storage guidance. A fabric that tolerates a damp cloth indoors is not automatically suitable for sustained sun, rain, or poolside use. Compare the complete product instructions rather than relying on the appearance of the material.
